2021 CLSC Updates
Chautauqua Institution's Department of the Education has announced Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha as a Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle selections for 2021 Summer Assembly Season, Week Six: Building a Culture of Empathy.
Event: 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021 – CHQ Assembly
A powerful and taut novel about racial tensions in LA, Your House Will Pay follows two families—one Korean-American, one African-American—grappling with the effects of a decades-old crime. In the wake of the police shooting of a black teenager, Los Angeles is as tense as it’s been since the unrest of the early 1990s. Protests and vigils are being staged all over the city. It’s in this dangerous tinderbox that two families must finally confront their pasts.
CLSC Season Theme 2021: The People
As we continue to see the world confronts and adapts to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are reminded of the resilience and ingenuity of its people. This year, the CLSC selections will explore our contribution as people, our commonality and what makes us human, without losing sight of the individual. They will highlight the myths, fables, and narratives of our humanness.

Spring CLSC Programs
In keeping with its long history of year-around presence and in response to the programing changes, we are looking forward, starting this coming Spring, to engaging our Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC) members in discussions over the CLSC selections beyond our regular summer season. Some CLSC authors will join us on our CHQ Assembly video platform for their presentations. While these presentations will be able to stand on their own, we will continue discussing them with our CLSC community during the Summer Assembly Season during their assigned weeks.
